5 SEO fundamentals every store owner should know
All articles

Most store owners think SEO means chasing algorithm updates or buying backlinks. In practice, the vast majority of the impact comes from a handful of fundamentals that rarely change. Get these right first — everything else is optimization at the margins.

1. Page speed is a ranking factor, not just a UX nicety. Google has been explicit about this for years. A slow store loses both rankings and the customers who never wait for it to load. Compress images, lazy-load anything below the fold, and cut unused scripts before touching anything else on this list.

2. One keyword focus per page. Trying to rank a single page for ten different terms usually means it ranks for none of them. Pick the primary term a page should own, use it naturally in the title, the first paragraph, and one heading — then let related terms show up organically in the body copy.

3. Title tags and meta descriptions are your ad copy. They don't directly move rankings much, but they decide whether someone clicks your result or the one above it. Write them for humans scanning a results page, not for keyword density.

4. Internal linking compounds. Every product and collection page should link to a handful of related pages. This helps customers browse, and it helps search engines understand which pages on your site matter most.

5. Fix technical basics before content. Broken links, duplicate content from filtered/sorted URLs, and missing alt text quietly cap how well even great content can perform. A short technical audit before a content push usually pays for itself.

None of this requires an agency retainer to start. Pick one item from this list, fix it this week, and move to the next. Compounding small technical wins beats chasing algorithm news every time.
